Penticton wasted little time setting the tone in Prince George. Gavin Cats opened the scoring with a one-timer from just inside the blue line, and the Vees carried that momentum through a strong road performance that ended in a 5-1 win at CN Centre.
The Cougars had chances to respond and generated some pressure at points, but Penticton’s pace, shot volume and special teams edge kept the home side chasing all night. Prince George finally broke through late in the second period, only for the Vees to answer quickly and close the door.
How the Game Played Out
The Vees came out fast and got the game’s first goal on a clean finish from Gavin Cats. Working the puck to the right side, the Vees found Cats for a one-timer that beat the goaltender from just inside the blue line and outside the circle. It was an early strike that immediately shifted the pressure onto Prince George.
The Cougars had their own looks soon after, including a sequence that saw a shot ring off the pipe and another chance stopped by Payton Shore. Prince George kept pushing around the netfront and spent stretches trying to force pucks through traffic, but Penticton’s goaltending and structure held up. That made it 4-0 and gave Penticton a commanding cushion heading into the third.
The Cougars finally got on the board with a goal from Demetriac, who solved Kanan Smith to make it 4-1. That goal gave the home crowd something to lean into, and Prince George kept pressing for more. The Cougars then had a promising chance around the crease when they jammed away at a loose puck and thought they had made it 4-2, but the goal was waved off and the count remained unchanged.
Any hope of a late rally vanished when Penticton answered on a two-on-one. Gavin Cats carried up the left wing and delivered a cross-ice feed to Nate Person, who finished to restore the four-goal cushion and make it 5-1. That final strike shut down the Cougars’ push and sealed the result at CN Centre.
What the Result Means
For Penticton, this was a complete road win built on early scoring, steady goaltending and timely finishing. The Vees led from the opening minutes, scored again in the second, and answered immediately after Prince George’s lone goal. In a game that could have tightened if the Cougars had converted one of their chances, Penticton never allowed the margin to get uncomfortable.
For Prince George, the night ended as a reminder of how costly missed opportunities can be. The Cougars had looks early, generated pressure at different points, and finally found one goal, but they spent most of the game trying to climb out of an early deficit. The late non-goal and the Vees’ response moments later summed up the difference between the teams.
The result also delivered a weekend split for Prince George at home opening weekend. Penticton, meanwhile, left with the kind of statement win that can set a strong tone in the early WHL season.
